Becoming an Academic Weapon

Last period of the day, working a closing shift, Friday night football afterparty, 2 hours of math homework I don’t understand, oh and I have to volunteer at the local hospital tomorrow.

How am I supposed to manage it all? I am definitely not a superhero?

But you are.

Every student is a superhero in their own right. Students are constantly balancing social life, academic responsibilities, career choices, and so much more at such a young age. Students are equipped with many skills that allow them to dominate their environment everyday.

3 minutes until the first bell rings, I didn’t finish my homework, all my friends are talking about how fun the weekend was, I think those kids might fight later, I should probably eat a poptart. Ringggggggg

How can students maximize their potential and become an Academic Weapon? First, what is an Academic Weapon?

Students that are rigorously training to defeat the School to Prison Pipeline, becoming high achieving adults leading long, successful lives.

Next, it’s most important to understand who the opponent is, and what tactics they might use against you.

School to Prison Pipeline sets students up to become incarcerated through the use of hyper-policing the school environment in every aspect. With excessive punishment based in discrimination, young people are trained to be criminalized from the time they enroll in kindergarten.

No talking, no running, no phones..only learning. Walk straight, raise your hand, be quiet. No you cannot finish your lunch you do not have any more time.

Academic Weapons navigate this hostile environment in several ways:

Stealth: Maintaining proper academic performance to avoid catastrophic confrontation.

Precision: Demonstrating appropriate preparedness for the environment to avoid risk of being labeled “absentee”.

Coordination: Working with other academic weapons and support agents to maximize impact and long term trajectory.

Balance: Enabling proper down time to allow systems to reset and function properly.

Students are even often rewarded in the School to Prison Pipeline when they demonstrate high performance within the system. Nevertheless, students open the most opportunities and long term success when they evolve into highly skilled Academic Weapons. The sooner students do, the better.
